Bill Bean is a small family run business that specializes in supplying the finest quality fresh produce to the restaurant trade. Bill Bean started back in 1979 on Soho’s notorious Berwick Street market.
Dennis ‘The Dog’ aka ‘Bill Bean’ quickly become known for his remarkable stall displays and exceptional fresh produce presentations not only on the market, but for shop fronts, television and food shows such as Olympia. With first class produce, competitive pricing and lots of charm it didn’t take long for him to become known to chefs in London’s restaurant trade. Dennis’s knowledge of fresh produce and working partnerships then extended to deliveries as well as market trading.
One of Dennis’s first customers was Balans Café, Old Compton Street, Soho. Initially starting with the small 24 hour café, Balans has now grown to a multiple venue restaurant group which Bill Bean still supplies to this day. Dennis also formed a close friendship with Michelin Starred Chef, Bruno Loubet, while supplying to him at a small restaurant called L’Hippocampe. Bruno then went on to open ‘Bistrot Bruno Loubet’ at The Zetter Hotel and also lead the team at The Grain Store, Kings Cross. Bill Bean continues to supply Bruno’s new venues and he and Dennis remain great friends. A couple of Dennis’s other long term customers and close friends include; Cameron Emirali of 10 Greek Street and 8 Hoxton Square, Carolyn Dawson of The Union Club, Soho and many other bespoke venues around London.
In 1993 the delivery service had expanded and become too much to run from the stall in Berwick Street at which point Dennis moved to a unit in New Spitalfields Market, London, where to this day Bill Bean still trades. We still pride ourselves in ‘small is best’, offering all of our customers an un-matched personal service, with attention to detail that is second to none. We take a great deal of pride in our work, handling and treating fresh produce with love and care. We also try to be as competitively priced as possible but refuse to compromise on our quality to do so. Our customer base is largely all through recommendation. We do not strive for ‘big’, but passion in what we provide. ‘Small and personal’.
Over the years we have formed close working partnerships with many of the leading regional growers and fresh produce suppliers in the UK. We have a great relationship with our fresh herb supplier Village Herbs based in Suffolk along with our Kent based grower Mr. Bett’s who supplies us with the finest seasonal English salad each year.
The business Dennis started back in 1979 is now backed by an amazing team in 2018. We have a close working relationship with all our staff, many of whom have been with us for many years. Jordan Humphrey & Luca Fiori now lead procurement for Bill Bean, Dennis’s wife Sally, son Billy, niece Elle and a handful of close family friends are also involved with Bill Bean. We are extremely passionate about what we do and are very committed to working together daily to provide the best possible service for all of our customers.
