Market Update for March 2017
Ramsons/Wild Garlic – The first cut has been delayed slightly by the recent frost, however availability is starting to pick up and should get into full swing over the coming weeks. Feel free to order now however the price may be slightly higher until our supplier in East Anglia starts cutting.
Jersey Royals – They are available on the market now but the early tubers always make a premium. The price will get better over the coming weeks but if you absolutely must have them feel free to order.
Blood Oranges – These are still outstanding however they won’t be around for much longer so take advantage while they are here.
Keitt/Kent Mangos – There is a good supply of these on the market now. They are large juicy and super sweet.
English Rhubarb – Beautiful Pink Rhubarb from the Rhubarb triangle up in Yorkshire, season is now underway but sadly the price is not as reasonable as it once was in previous years, please specify English when ordering.
Hispi Cabbage – From Portugal, great quality and reasonably priced.
Spinach – From France with large dark green leaves and minimal stalk, looking very good at present. We would recommend it, Popeye would agree.
English Watercress – Back in season and the supply should be steady subject to the weather over the coming weeks.
Little Gem Lettuce – Supplies from Spain have been very consistent over the last few months. However, that seems to have settled now and should stay stable until our English grower Mr. Betts from Kent gets underway in mid may – depending on the weather.
Fresh Herbs – Large fresh 100g bunches coming in from our amazing supplier in Suffolk, our usual range as always including Thai / Red Basil, Lovage and Sorrel.
English Asparagus – Subject to the weather our supplier in Norfolk should only be approximately 4-6 weeks away! I will let you know as soon as the first spears arrive on the market.
Bunched Carrot & Bunched Beetroot – Only available by the box, they have an excellent flavour and the price is reasonable, please specify ‘bunched’ when ordering.
Purple Sprouting Broccoli – Supplies are very good at the minute and the price remains stable.
Spanish Onions – Spanish season is now ending, you may have to discard an odd one from each bag until we make the switch to Chilean shortly.
Tomatoes – (All Varieties) sadly the price is up across the board, hopefully it will come back down over the coming weeks.
Broad Beans/Peas – Are just arriving on the market from Morocco but the quality is still not so good yet and the price is high. I think it’s best to hang on just a little longer until the best quality arrives. I will let you know when they are worth adding to your menus, it shouldn’t be too long, subject to weather.
Curly Kale - Supplies are tightening up and we may have no choice but to switch to pre-packed soon which will be a higher price for a lesser weight.
Quinces – Season drawing to a close now, please phase out of your menu.
Purple Sprouting Broccoli- Supplies are very sporadic and the price is rising.
Capsicums – Red, Yellow, Green and Orange peppers are all up in price. You can always request class 2 peppers by the case if needed for chopping up or roasting. Please specify class 2 when ordering and we will do our best to source them for you.
Pears – Italian Williams are now finished. We have moved to Packham’s from the Cape and the price is up.
Cavolo Nero – Season now drawing to a close, we recommend Portuguese Hispi cabbages as an alternative.
Romanesco - Season now drawing to a close, supply not stable.
Turkish Pomegranates – Season is now finished, we have switched to Indian and the price is up.
